Traveling With Your Newborn Baby
It’s that time of year again! Michigan Family Doulas has had a lot of requests from families to take our doulas along with them as they travel up north, out of the state and even out of the country! (Yes, we can go to Anguilla and Hawaii with you!!) So, I thought this blog post would be timely…
- Plan Ahead: Before embarking on your trip, research and plan your itinerary with your newborn baby in mind. Consider factors such as flight durations, layovers, and time zone changes. Maybe checkout which airlines have a bad reputation for delays and cancellations…and avoid them altogether. Opt for a destination that offers baby-friendly amenities and services to make your stay more comfortable.
- Pack Smart: Pack essentials for your baby, such as diapers, formula or breast milk, wipes, extra clothes, and blankets. Carry a well-stocked diaper bag with easy access to these items during the journey. Consider a backpack version of a diaper bag! Bring along any comfort items, such as a favorite toy or blanket, to help your baby feel secure if they’re a little older. Your newborn just needs you!
- Choose the Right Travel Gear: Invest in travel-friendly gear like a lightweight stroller, a portable crib, and a comfortable baby carrier. These items will make it easier to navigate airports, public transportation, and sightseeing destinations while keeping your baby safe and cozy.
- Prioritize Safety: Ensure your baby’s safety during travel by using a properly installed car seat and following all airline regulations. It’s also a good idea to carry a first-aid kit with essential supplies in case of any emergencies. Oh, and a nail file. Trust me on this….
- Maintain a Routine: Try to maintain your baby’s routine as much as possible during the journey. Stick to regular feeding and nap times to keep your little one comfortable and content. Familiarity with their routine will help your baby adjust to the new surroundings more easily. Nursing or feeding your newborn while taking off in the airplane and while landing, can help their sensitive ears adjust to the altitude changes more easily.
- Be Mindful of Hygiene: For me, this one should have probably been #1….but I am trying to chill a little on my germaphobia in my old age 😉 Newborns have delicate immune systems, so prioritize hygiene during travel. Carry hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, and a changing pad for on-the-go diaper changes. Wipe down surfaces and wash your hands frequently to minimize exposure to germs.
- Be Flexible and Patient: Remember that traveling with a newborn may require extra time and patience. Be prepared for unexpected delays or changes in plans. Stay calm and flexible, as babies can pick up on stress. A positive and relaxed attitude will help create a pleasant travel experience for everyone involved.
Traveling with your newborn baby can be a fun experience that creates lasting memories. By planning ahead, packing smart, prioritizing safety, maintaining routines, and staying flexible, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for your family. Embrace the adventure and enjoy exploring the world with your little one by your side.
