Surviving the Baby Registry: 12 Essentials You’ll Use Every Day (+ 5 Overhyped Products You Can Skip)
As a new parent, the baby registry can feel like navigating a minefield of products – from the must-have essentials to the completely unnecessary. With endless options and well-meaning advice from friends and family, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and end up with a registry full of items you’ll rarely (if ever) use.
But fear not, the experienced doulas at Michigan Family Doulas are here to guide you through the chaos. We’ve compiled a list of the 12 baby registry items you’ll reach for day in and day out, plus 5 overhyped products you can leave right on the shelf.
12 Baby Registry Essentials You’ll Use Every Day:
- Swaddle Blankets – Because who doesn’t love a good baby burrito? These are lifesavers for soothing fussy little ones. If you’re strapped for cash, stick to a simple swaddle blanket. Otherwise, velcro is amazing.
- Nursing Pillow – Your back will thank you. Trust us on this one.
- Baby Carrier – Hands-free baby snuggles? Yes, please! Plus, if you use this your baby can spend less time on their backs
- White Noise Machine – Sweet dreams are made of these….For real, we’re not kidding. Silent rooms = harder to soothe toddlers.
- Diaper Caddy – Keep all your changing supplies in one convenient spot.
- Baby Bathtub – Splash-free baths are the way to go.
- Baby Nail Clippers – Tiny fingers, sharp nails. Now…the exception to this is that if you don’t feel confident clipping a baby fingernail, use a nail file instead. You don’t want to accidentally clip your baby’s skin, trust us.
- Pacifiers – Suck, soothe, repeat. Before you come at me-you will never be able to convince me that pacifiers are bad. We have debunked the myth that they interfere with breastfeeding and have PROVEN pacifiers reduce SIDS risk. Plus, babies NEED to suck. #Istandbymyviews
- Baby Thermometer – Fevers happen, be prepared. Must be rectal thermometer for accurate newborn readings. Sorry. Buy some Vaseline too, just in case.
- Baby Bouncer – The perfect spot for baby to hang out while you get stuff done.
- Burp Cloths – Because spit-up is inevitable.
- Baby Monitor – Keep an eye (and ear) on that little nugget.
5 Overhyped Products You’ll Likely Leave on the Shelf:
- Wipe Warmer – Because who has time to heat up wipes? Also, what if you have to change your baby in the car on a trip? Cold wipes feel REALLY cold if you’re used to warm wipes.
- Bottle Sterilizer – Listen, I didn’t want to put this here because as a doula, I LOVE a sterilizer. They’re so helpful. But, if you’re pressed to cut things out of your supply list I guess you could leave this one at the store. Maybe?
- Diaper Genie – Your trash can works just fine, thanks.
- Baby Food Maker – Spoiler alert: mashing bananas is easy. Also, any kind of food processor works just the same
- Fancy Baby Shoes – They’re just going to end up lost or covered in drool.
Remember, the key to a successful registry is to focus on the essentials and trust your instincts. And if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, the doulas at Michigan Family Doulas are here to lend a helping hand (or a sarcastic quip).
