Postpartum Hair Loss
Postpartum hair loss is a common condition experienced by many new moms. It is a normal part of the postpartum recovery process and affects up to 50% of women in the months following childbirth.
Postpartum hair loss occurs when a woman’s hormone levels change dramatically after giving birth. During pregnancy, the body produces more estrogen and progesterone, which can cause hair to grow thicker and longer. However, after childbirth, the estrogen and progesterone levels drop suddenly, resulting in a decrease of hair growth. During this time, some women experience thinning of the hair, as well as increased shedding.
The good news is that postpartum hair loss is usually temporary and goes away within a few months. Most women will see their hair start to grow back, although it may take 6 to 12 months for hair to return to its pre-pregnancy thickness. While there is no surefire way to prevent postpartum hair loss, there are steps that can be taken to help minimize it.
It is important to eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of lean protein, as well as vitamins A and B, to help promote hair growth. If your iron levels are low, a good quality supplement of a non-constipating iron (we recommend ferrous gluconate) is a smart idea. This is part of why I push balanced nutrition in the postpartum recovery period–and to not eat vegetarian or vegan during this recovery, either. Additionally, using a gentle shampoo and avoiding harsh chemicals, tight hairstyles and aggressive brushing, are also good ideas. While your hair is growing back out, a shorter hairstyle might make life easier for a while and make you feel good-especially since it will be a little easier to manage while taking care of your newborn.
