That Time My Baby Pooped On Me in Public…
It was a night that I’ll never forget. My family and I had gone out to dinner at a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday.
Everything was wonderful! The restaurant was not horribly packed, we didn’t have to wait to get our table, the food was incredible and my glass of wine was absolute perfection. It was the first one I had in over a year! Our baby was about 4 weeks old at the time, and had been a little fussy the last few hours, but nothing out of the ordinary.
We had been at the restaurant for nearly an hour when my partner noticed a smell coming from our baby’s car seat area. I picked our daughter up to hold her close to make sure she was ok, and to just make sure she didn’t need a new diaper. We quickly realized that our little one had pooped through her clothes, all the way up her back….as I held her, it crept up almost all the way to her neck. It was so much that a few drops of baby poop dripped off me and onto the floor. It made it’s way onto my dress! This was a 5 star restaurant we were sitting in, now covered with baby poop and smearing it everywhere!
To say that we were mortified and embarrassed is an understatement. Anyone who has ever had an infant knows exactly what it’s like when they have a ‘blowout’ and it doesn’t really matter where you are when this happens. It’s totally out of anyone’s control!
We had no choice but to clean up the mess. We used our baby’s spare clothes and some napkins to do the job, and we apologized profusely to the staff and other diners for the disruption. We were so embarrassed that we considered just leaving, but in the end, we decided to stay and finish our meal.
My partner and I talked about the incident for days afterwards. We both felt terrible that our baby had ruined the evening, and we vowed to be more prepared in the future. We now make sure that our diaper bag is always stocked with extra clothes and wipes. That night taught us that babies can be unpredictable, (and sometimes gross) and that accidents happen. Although it was embarrassing, it was also a good reminder to always be prepared. Or, I suppose, it taught me not to take an infant into a 5 star restaurant? Not sure what the lesson is here….
We now laugh about it and look back fondly on the memory of our baby pooping through their clothes in a restaurant. It was certainly an unforgettable experience. I know I’ll never be the same!
