When Parenting is Outdated

Wait….what? Parenting styles can be outdated? Well…..maybe.

Parenting standards have changed drastically over the last few decades. From the traditional view of the father as the authority figure to the more modern, collaborative parenting style, there have been some major shifts in the way parents raise their children.

However, some outdated parenting standards still remain

Some outdated parenting standards still remain in our society.

These include the belief that children should be seen but not heard, the expectation that children should obey their parents no matter what, and the idea that children should be “punished” for bad behavior. These outdated ideas can lead to an atmosphere of fear and stress in a home, as well as prevent children from developing the skills and confidence to face the world.

On the other hand, updated safety standards are becoming increasingly important for parents. With the rise of technology, the internet, and the prevalence of online predators, parents need to be aware of the potential risks their children face. They need to be vigilant about monitoring their children’s online activities and teaching them about online safety.

It’s also important for parents to remain updated on the latest safety trends and devices. such as video doorbells, smoke detectors, and internet filters. But, what I am referring to that’s MOST relevant to this conversation is: updates to safe sleep guidelines. Many things have changed since the 60’s & 70’s -when many of us were little tykes.

Here is a link to the modern ‘Safe to Sleep‘ campaign that all parents and grandparents should memorize.

While some outdated parenting standards remain, it’s important for parents & grandparents to stay informed on the latest safety standards. By doing so, they can ensure all the children in their lives are safe and protected while also helping them develop important life skills.
