The Bare Minimum 5-5-5 Postpartum Rule

Welcoming a newborn baby into the world brings significant physical and emotional changes for the new mom/birthing person. And folks, this can literally be the understatement of the century for some people. The postpartum period, often referred to as the “fourth trimester,” is a crucial time of healing and bonding. To help ease this transition, the 5-5-5 postpartum rule has gained popularity among experts and new parents alike.

The 5-5-5 rule centers around three essential aspects for the first five days, five weeks, and five months after childbirth, with a focus on self-care, support, and communication. We’re actually going to break this down into 2 parts.

In the first five days, rest and recovery are paramount. All of us at Michigan Family Doulas, and all doulas in general, recommend that you spend 5 days IN the bed…..5 days ON the bed…..and 5 days NEAR the bed, that first 2 weeks after birth. This seems pretty self explanatory. Go to bed and stay there when you bring your newborn home. Rest, eat, feed & snuggle your baby, poop (you and the baby!) and repeat. In the bed….then on top of it….then near it (on the couch is a good idea).

Adequate nutrition, gentle exercise (think walking or light yoga….not crunches and moving tractor tires) and emotional support”

Over the next five weeks, maintaining self-care and seeking assistance continue to be crucial. Establishing a routine and nurturing mental health are vitally important. Adequate nutrition, gentle exercise (think walking….not crunches and moving tractor tires) and emotional support from friends, family, or support groups can make a significant difference.

The final five months mark a time to reassess and realign. Moms should celebrate their accomplishments and accept that every journey is unique. Connecting with other new parents who may share similar experiences can create a strong support network.

The 5-5-5 postpartum rule empowers new mothers to prioritize their well-being during this transformative phase of life. By focusing on self-care, seeking support, and communicating openly, women can embrace motherhood with confidence and strength. Remember, the journey of parenthood is not meant to be traversed alone, and following the 5-5-5 rule can help pave the way for a smoother and more fulfilling postpartum experience.
